On my family's Disney Cruise to Alaska, I knew I needed to get magnets to decorate our cabin door because Season's Leadership Co-Founder Debbie Collard (the queen of Disney) clued me into the fun activity practiced by many experienced cruisers. In fact, she described it in an earlier Almanac post as "a visual reminder that I have transitioned from daily life to vacation mode."
And she was right - not only did they add to the fun of our cruise (and make us look like experienced cruisers) but every time I passed them, they reminded me I was on a once-in-a-life-time experience far away from the pressures of work. One of the great things about being on a cruise, unless you are prepared to pay a lot for onboard Wi-Fi, is that you can totally unplug from outside influences. My brother hosted this amazing trip for my family and extended family, and we took advantage of all the opportunities to spend time together and chill including unlimited frozen yogurt by the pool! But even though we don't always have the luck, time or funds to take a dream vacation, there are ways to take care of yourself and carve out the time as a leader to rest and recharge.
Debbie's previous blog "recharge your leadership batteries" offers some timely insights to help you reboot your own practice of "me time." She shares this important reminder that inspires me to take time for myself, "by taking time off not only was I benefiting, but I was giving someone else the opportunity to stretch and grow and show themselves and others what they could do." So, as a leader, plan to take some time to rest and recharge this summer and allow space for others to step into their own leadership.
